Koda has entered into an agreement with the livestreaming platform Twitch. The agreement ensures that songwriters, composers and music publishers are paid when their music is used on the platform.
Danish music creators will now be paid when their music is used on Twitch, thanks to a new agreement between Koda and the US streaming platform.
Fundamentally, this is about ensuring that music creators are paid when their music is used and generates value.
- Anne Sophie Gersdorff Schrøder, Chief Commercial Officer at Koda
Twitch is best known for livestreaming gaming, esports, talks, events and other forms of entertainment in which music forms part of the content. The platform is based on different patterns of use and revenue streams from traditional music and media services, making the agreement an important step in Koda’s efforts to protect music creators’ rights in new digital environments.
Anne Sophie Gersdorff Schrøder, Chief Commercial Officer at Koda, says:
‘Fundamentally, this is about ensuring that music creators are paid when their music is used and generates value. That also applies when music forms part of communities and user experiences in which revenue is generated in new ways. The agreement with Twitch shows that music creators’ rights and new digital business models can go hand in hand.’
With the agreement, Koda is taking another step into the creator economy and into the digital communities where music increasingly forms a natural part of the experience. At the same time, the agreement demonstrates that the Danish rights model can also be applied to digital platforms where content is created and shared in ways that differ from those of more traditional media.
The agreement also means that Koda and Twitch will bring to an end the case Koda had brought before the Danish Copyright Licence Tribunal. The case concerned, among other things, the terms governing Twitch’s use of music and which revenue streams should be taken into account when determining remuneration for music creators.
Koda regards the new agreement as an important achievement in its efforts to ensure that music creators are paid on digital platforms, where music is increasingly used as an integral part of content, communities and new revenue streams.
