Avoid awkward silence in the hair salon

12. August 2024

At the BeYoutiful hair salon, the radio is on all day. The owner, Katja Holst, knows the great value music adds to the salon – for the customers, as well as for the other hairdressers. And the music also helps to avoid awkward silence that can sometimes occur during a treatment.

As soon as you step into the salon, you are surrounded by a relaxing musical experience, where you can sense that both customers and staff are happy. Katja relies on the radio, which acts as a soundtrack to a great hairdressing experience for the many customers every day. The music indeed plays a special role in the salon.

No awkward silence with background music

Some customers love to chat from the moment they sit in the hairdresser's chair. Others are quieter and use the time at the hairdresser's to relax and find peace. There should be room for everyone in Katja's hair salon. But sometimes the silence can create an awkward atmosphere, which affects the customer's experience. And Katja wants to give all customers a good experience. Here, music plays a big role.

Not only does the music create an incredible atmosphere for us. It also fills the silence if a customer doesn't want to talk during the haircut. We avoid the awkward silence because the music fills the void.

The music in the background is quite important for the overall experience in the salon. But the radio hosts also contribute with light and entertaining segments. Even though many customers come to chat with their hairdresser, conversations can sometimes come to a halt. Here, the radio hosts' segments provide conversation topics about the day's news in a more relaxed and light-hearted manner.

Music at the center – all day

Katja turns on the radio every morning when she steps into the salon. She does this because she can count on the music in the radio to match the day's pace. She recommends other hairdressers to use the radio if they are unsure about how to create a playlist. The playlist should be carefully selected to include calm tracks for the morning hours and gradually build up the atmosphere with more energy towards the afternoon and on weekends.

If the playlist isn't good, then it doesn't matter. When a customer arrives for a hair appointment at 8:00 AM, it's not very nice to be greeted by disco music throughout the salon.

Katja's best advice is to avoid playing wild music in the early morning. This way, customers have a better experience and a good start to the day, and the other hairdressers in the salon get a calm start to a long workday. Katja finds that the right music creates a better working environment and a more relaxed workday in the salon.

The musicians need to make money as well

Behind every piece of music are artists and musicians who work hard to create the songs we know and love. When you choose to use a music license from Koda/Gramex, you are like Katja, helping to ensure that these artists are financially rewarded for their work. For Katja, it's a given to support the musicians.

Music is part of the customers' experience. And musicians also need to earn their money, just like I need to earn mine.

In this way, the music in BeYoutiful not only connects to the salon's cozy atmosphere, but also to a larger culture. Because when hairdressers like Katja have a music license instead of a royalty-free music service, they financially support the creators of the music, which helps ensure that new music continues to be created.
