The sound of a peaceful shopping trip

1. October 2024

At Meny, store manager Torben aims to provide customers with a unique experience – a peaceful shopping trip. Customers are greeted by a distinctive soundscape that fosters a calm and welcoming atmosphere amidst the hustle and bustle of shopping. However, music is not played throughout the entire store. Torben has developed a special music concept for selected zones within the store.

Three selected zones with pleasant music

Torben has made a conscious decision not to have music throughout the entire store. This decision was made by someone who knows his customers very well. There is a difference between when a customer is efficient and when a customer wants to immerse themselves and be inspired.

Therefore, Meny has chosen three zones in the store where they play music to create a pleasant experience. The music is intended to make customers want to explore the wine department, fruits & vegetables, and the fresh produce section. These are three zones where customers typically need a little extra time and inspiration. The fruit & vegetable department is the first section customers encounter in Meny, where they are greeted by an overwhelming selection of fresh goods. In the wine department, customers often explore and study the selection. The same concept applies to the fresh produce section, where customers often look for ideas for the weekend and study the delicacies. In all three zones, the music contributes to creating an atmosphere of calm and contemplation, which makes customers want to linger in the selection.

“It's about creating a sensory experience in selected areas, so people can relax their shoulders and perhaps spend a few extra minutes here,” says Torben, Store Manager at Meny.

In the other departments, music has been omitted. When customers walk with their shopping list in hand and need to remember staple items like milk and flour, it should be done efficiently. Here, it's about giving people the peace to get what they need quickly. The music is thus targeted at the areas where customers most often seek inspiration, while the more functional departments are free of music.

A conscious decision to invest in music

Many supermarkets choose not to play background music or use royalty-free music, which often consists of unknown tracks. Meny has actively chosen to invest in music. Meny collaborates with the music platform Auditiv, which compiles playlists that match the store's profile. The playlist consists of well-known pop music that customers typically recognize from the radio.

“It's music that people can recognize and relate to. It creates a calm and welcoming atmosphere, without being too much. We avoid metal and modern pop, which can create too much energy in a busy supermarket environment.” – Torben, store manager at Meny

The use of music in Meny is part of a larger strategy to create a great customer experience. Just as Meny prioritizes skilled employees and a good selection of products, they also prioritize spending money on a music license from Koda/Gramex and quality speakers, ensuring the sound quality is excellent.

Music makes customers stay a little longer

Torben has discovered that music encourages customers to linger and feel inspired, particularly in departments where they take time to carefully choose their items. When customers stay longer, they can seek advice from employees, who are experts eager to share their knowledge. This knowledge is crucial for Meny to pass on to its customers.

The decision to invest in music stems from the store's ability to attract diverse customer segments and serve as a hub for inspiration. Many customers arrive without a shopping list. They are quality-conscious and prefer to take their time examining the various goods before making a decision. The music helps create a pleasant experience, allowing customers to shop at a leisurely pace.

"At our Meny store, customers often arrive without a clear idea of what they want. Our job is to inspire them, and we do that, among other things, with music." – Torben, Store Manager at Meny

For many, music is more than just sound. They understand that many customers lead busy lives, and they aim to offer a pleasant and peaceful shopping experience. That's where the music comes in.
