Understand copyright and management
Koda manages the copyright for composers, songwriters, and music publishers. As a music creator, copyright ensures you must grant permission for your music to be played in public.
As a member of Koda, composers and songwriters authorize Koda to negotiate the public use of their music. You still hold all copyright to the work, which means that you decide whether others should be allowed to process your music/lyrics, add new lyrics to your music or the like.
Copyright lasts for 70 years after the creator's death, ensuring that composers and songwriters receive royalties for the use of their works. This exclusive right allows creators to control their music in two distinct ways:
Exclusive rights to your music in two ways
1. Make your music available to others
This means that others must obtain permission from the music creator to use their music. For instance, radio stations need agreements with music creators to broadcast their songs.
2. Produce copies of the work
This means others must obtain the music creator's permission to record and reproduce the work.
Koda manages the copyright of music creators
For individual composers and songwriters, tracking all users of their music and ensuring agreements and payments can be nearly impossible. This is where Koda steps in.
By joining Koda, composers and songwriters transfer the management of their musical works' copyright to Koda. Koda then ensures members receive fair royalty payment through negotiations and agreements with those who use their music in public.
Collective management benefits creators and users
Koda manages the rights of nearly all music creators worldwide, either directly or indirectly. This means we negotiate the use of music on behalf of a large collective of creators and distribute royalties to those whose works are used. This process is known as collective management.
Collective management benefits both individual music creators and music users. It is advantageous for users, such as hairdressers, radio stations, or concert venues, to approach one entity for permission to play almost all music globally. Otherwise, they would need to contact each creator individually for permission to play each piece of music.
