Rights

Whether you are an experienced music creator or new to the industry, understanding music rights is essential. We've compiled valuable information on copyright and rights management to help you navigate the complex rules.

Music creators and performing artists

Koda represents music creators and music publishers. These music creators include composers, lyricists, arrangers, sub-authors and songwriters – essentially, those who create the music.

Koda does not represent performing artists – musicians and singers – or labels. Performing artists are represented by Gramex.

Permission required to use others' music

A song is protected for 70 years after the death of the creator. If you want to adapt or use something from a protected work, you must ask the copyright holder for permission.

Do you compose music for theater or revue?

There are specific rules you need to know when your music is written for dramatic performances. In this area, a distinction is made between what are called "grand rights" and "small rights."

Grand rights

If you have composed music specifically for a dramatic performance or play, it falls under grand rights. This includes operas, musicals, and ballets. We do not pay royalties for music used in these performances. You may consider joining Koda Dramatik, which manages grand rights.

Small rights

If your music is used in a dramatic performance without being composed specifically for a particular stage work or production, it may involve small rights, which are managed by Koda. Several elements and conditions must be met before we can make a payment.

Are you an heir to a rightsholder?

Koda is not automatically notified when a member passes away. Therefore, it is important that you, as an heir or estate administrator, inform us. There are several details we need when processing the matter of the deceased.

What do I need to do?

Once inheritance matters are settled, Koda's ongoing payments will be made to the registered heirs' respective NemKonti. These payments are taxable and reported to the Tax Authorities as B-income.
