Music streaming services

When your music is streamed on services like Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube, you, as a music creator or publisher, receive payment for it.

How royalties are paid out

Streaming services allocate about 70 percent of their subscriber income to all rights holders of the music, covering both master rights and performance rights. Of this 70 percent, 55 percent goes to the label as payment for the master rights, which could be to yourself if you are your own label.

Koda distributes approximately 15 percent of the 70 percent. This portion, known as public performance, is the payment for your performance rights to the music creators and their publishers, whom we represent at Koda.

How much can I expect to receive?

Your distributions will vary from service to service and from one period to the next. This is because the royalty payment for a stream are determined by:

  1. The individual service's revenues and subscriptions.
  2. The number of streams in a given period.
  3. Your share of rights to the music.

In the table below, you can see examples of average payments from Koda to members who hold full rights (100%) to the music in question. Across all services, Koda paid out an average of DKK 10.80 for 1,000 streams in 2023.

Payment for 1,000 streams

ServiceAverage payment
SpotifyDKK 9.60
Apple MusicDKK 19.50
YouSee music DKK 14.20

From play to pay

It varies as to when you receive payments from the streaming services. As a rule however, it takes approximately 6 months from the first stream until you receive payment.

  • YouSee Music is paid out every month.
  • Spotify and other music streaming services make payments quarterly in March, June, September, and December.
  • TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram are paid out annually.

What you need to know about music streaming services

What is the value of a stream?

Since the value of a stream depends on the revenue of the streaming service, we can only determine the worth of a specific stream – and how much you can expect to be paid – after the music has been streamed.

Are you your own publisher?

If your music is streamed, you will receive a payment from the distributor you used to upload your music for your master rights. This should not be misinterpreted with the public performance payment, which constitutes the 15 percent that Koda distributes.

You need to add an ISRC code

It's crucial that your music, whether streamed or downloaded, is registered at My Koda. We need to claim your rights from the streaming services to ensure prompt payment. This requires your song to be registered at My Koda, ideally 14 days before its release. Remember to include an ISRC code, which you can obtain from Gramex or through your distributor.
