Streaming of films, series, and TV shows

If your music is featured in a film, a series, or a TV show that is being streamed, you as the creator will receive payment for it.

At Koda, we have agreements with most major Video on Demand (VOD) services. These include among others Netflix, HBO, iTunes, and Filmstriben, as well as TV services such as TV 2 Play and Viaplay.

When can I expect a payment?

The short answer is that it varies by service. Generally, you should expect about 6 months from the first stream to the first payment.

  • TV2 PLAY, DRTV, Netflix: Four times a year.
  • Viaplay, HBO, Disney+: Twice a year.
  • Filmcentralen, Filmstriben, etc.: Once a year.
  • Interactive TV services (if you replay the content): Once a year.

From play to pay in three steps

1. What has been streamed?

Each streaming service informs us about which film or series titles have been streamed. The frequency of these reports varies by service, but the majority reports approximately every three months.

2. How much of your music is included?

The production company behind the movie or series sends us a cue sheet. This sheet lists the music used, including titles, composers, lyricists, and the duration of the music's presence in the movie or series.

3. How many streams?

Once we have received the cue sheet, we can distribute a payment to you for the time your music has been featured in the film or series. The amount you receive depends on how much the film or series is streamed.

Every minute counts

When discussing per-minute values, we refer to how we calculate the value of a stream. The table below shows an example of what subscription based services paid per minute – the per minute value – for the most streamed content in 2023. The table is based on data from Netflix, TV 2 Play, DR.tv, and Viaplay, exclusively for consumption in Denmark per year per service.

How to read the table

On the left, you can see a range, such as 1-50, representing the most streamed movies and TV episodes. On the right, there is an average value per minute, for instance, DKK 681. The table indicates that the top 50 most streamed movies and TV episodes paid out an average of DKK 681 annually per minute.

Average payment for 1 minute

Most streamed film/series episodeAverage minute value
1 - 50DKK 681
51 - 250DKK 353
251 - 1,000DKK 155

What can I expect in terms of payment?

Both examples here illustrate the estimated annual payout for views in Denmark for a complete work, which represents the total amount to be distributed among all rights holders of the work.

Example 1: You have composed music for a TV series

You have contributed 35 minutes of music per episode for a series with 6 episodes, and each episode is among the top 50 most streamed. Your payment calculation is: 35 min x Dkk 681 x 6 = DKK 143,010.

Example 2: You have composed music for a film

Your music accounts for 40 minutes in a film, and the film is among the 251-1,000 most streamed. Your payment calculation is: 40 min x DKK 155 = DKK 6,200.

Note: These average minute values can be used to make general estimates of the expected annual payout from Koda (per year per service) based on the anticipated popularity of the film or series.
