TV channels
If your music is used on TV, such as in a documentary or a news jingle, you are entitled to a royalty payment. But how much can you receive, and when will you get paid?
We automatically receive information about where and when your music has been used on TV. You get paid based on the number of minutes your music is aired. Just ensure your music is registered at My Koda.
When will I receive a payment?
- Payments for music used on most TV channels are made monthly.
- From the time of your work played on TV to the time of payment, you should expect approximately 2-3 months.
- Some channels are paid out quarterly or semi-annually.
How much will I get paid?
There are three factors that influence your payment:
- The value of one minute of airplay on the channel where your music was played.
- The time of day your music was played.
- The percentage of the music you own the rights to.

International TV channels
Generally, you will receive payment if your music is played on national TV channels internationally. However, there may be exceptions, such as advertisements, which are not always paid out. The rules of the Performing Rights Organization (PRO) in the respective country always apply.
Local TV and satellite channels are often distributed through sampling. This means you are only entitled to money if your music is played during the sampling period agreed upon between the TV channel and the PRO in that country.
What you need to know about TV royalties
1. Commercials
Is your music featured in a TV commercial? If so, the payment is 50 percent of the individual TV channel's minute value. This is because commercial music is played more frequently than other types of music on TV.
2. Jingles and theme tunes etc.
Is your music played as theme music, a signature tune, or a jingle on TV? Whether it's for a game show, reality TV, or a news broadcast, the full minute value is paied out for this type of music.
3. Trailers, station IDs, etc.
If your music is used by a TV channel in a trailer or station ID, only 10 percent of the minute value is paid out. This type of music is typically not created exclusively for a specific program and is primarily used before or after a TV program.
Is your music featured in a TV commercial?
Please add an audio file when you register your advertising music at My Koda. This ensures more accurate payment for advertisements and helps us verify the connection between the music used in an advertisement and your music.
Is your music featured in a film or series?
If your music is featured in a movie, we will pay you based on a cue sheet. A cue sheet is a list of all the works used in a movie. It is primarily the responsibility of the film producer, but it can also be you, as the composer, who creates it. We encourage you to check on My Koda under Film/TV series search to see if a cue sheet has been submitted to us.
