May 2024

Koda’s May distribution 2024 took place on Thursday 16 May. For a full overview of the areas and performance periods included, see the Koda distribution schedule

TV and Radio

The May distribution includes the use of music on all TV and Radio channels where distributions are made monthly. These primarily concern performances in February 2024, but in several areas you will find that performances from March 2024 have also already been reported, processed and are ready for distribution.

NOTE: The preliminary per-minute values for 2024 are negatively affected by a disagreement on TV distribution tariffs with Nuuday, the company behind products such as YouSee. We will only know the final values when the tariff issue has been settled. The distributions for other channels such as TV3, Kanal 4, Kanal 5 and so on are also affected by this conflict, which means that the 2024 distributions for these channels have been postponed until further notice. At present, we do not know when we will make distributions for 2024 for the channels mentioned here.

As regards TV, the May distribution includes final settlements for music use in 2023 on the TV channels operated by DR and TV2. The final settlement covers those channels where, after all the monthly distributions for the year have been made, some undistributed revenues still remain within the area. These revenues are now distributed to the relevant works and rightsholders in a manner proportional to the original distributions made for DR and TV2.

Background Music

The May distribution includes revenues generated within the category Background Music, which covers areas such as music in shops, gyms, restaurants, hotels and clubs.

As regards background sections with reporting, the distribution covers music use throughout 2023. Koda obtains reporting from professional providers of music services for commercial use, and these reports subsequently form the basis for distributing the revenues generated within a specific background section.

As regards background sections without reporting, the distribution covers music use in the second half of 2023. In this case, Koda bases the distribution on analogous data from other representative areas. For these background sections, a distribution covering the first half of 2023 was paid out in December last year.

You can read more about Koda’s various background sections here

Concert and Online

As regards concerts, the May 2024 distribution covers all concerts where music reporting has been processed and completed and where Koda has received all necessary information from the concert promoter (for example about ticket revenues per concert). This time, the distribution includes some concerts held as late as April 2024.

As regards Online use of music, the May distribution includes monthly distributions for the Danish music streaming service Nuuday Musik (YouSee Musik and Telmore Musik), covering music use in March 2024.

Abroad

Koda regularly pays out revenues received from sister societies for the use of Koda members’ music abroad. Koda’s distribution rates reflect the individual societies’ distribution frequency and speed in their various distribution areas.

Prior to this May distribution, Koda has received new quarterly distributions from sister societies in Finland (TEOSTO), Norway (TONO) and Germany (GEMA). These are general distributions for 2023 and further back in time, and most of the revenues were generated within the areas TV, Online og Radio. Furthermore, Koda has received a semi-annual distribution from the Italian society SIAE, which is now being passed on to Koda’s members.
